epa traktor

I don't know if these type of motor vehicles exists outside Sweden. We call them EPA traktor here and you usually find them out in the countryside. It's a car rebuilt into a "tractor" so it can't go faster than 50 km/h (or is it 30??). This one even had the compulsory fuzzy dice. Classic!

The EPA-tractor was born during the second world war. There was shortages of food and no tractors to be imported so old worn out cars were converted. My old father can still recall a two-seated exclusive Auburn from the 1920-s being converted, almost trembling at the memory. EPA-tractor is named after a low-price supermarket of the times, Enhetspris AB. After the war, the need at the farms for EPA's was gone but then the countryside youth found a way to drive something car-looking before the age of 18 (you can drive tractors from 16 or even 15 if you work in a farm). The rules weren't changed though, so the cars to be converted had to have a self supporting frame. In the 1970's, the only cheap available car with self supporting frame was Volvo Duett, the Volvo PV stationwagon. So most of the EPA's are based on this car. And no, I never owned an EPA of my own but yes, I've been riding in them.

Next time around I'll tell you the differences between the EPA tractors and the A-tractors, built according to the new regulations after 1975.

Ses.
