This is from our (me & the preschool where I work) excursion to the Technological Museum in Stockholm. We found a small TV studio where we played. These two little ladies were my actors. We had a lot of fun and made a great show!

This is how Fiskayet looks when you come crawling through the snow on your way home from the night bus. Weird...

outhouse & la rock 01

heat, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

This is your brain on crack...
Been listening a lot to Nathan Fake's most excellent "Outhouse" the Original Mix and to Vitalic's just as excellent "La rock 01" from his Poney EP. Dark and desolate electro with a powerful groove. Perfect for nightrides through boring old european cityscapes with their concrete sleeping cubes and factories. These songs give any worn out, dirty, boring project or suburb a cool sci-fi shine! With these songs in my ears Fiskayet has become even cooler.

number six & dr gaius baltar

six & baltar, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

This can't be true. I've seen all 13 episodes and now there's no more episodes left. I need more... just one small fix... please... This series, Battlestar Galactica, has made me feel like I felt as a kid when I watched Star Trek, Space 1999 and Japanese monster movies like Destroy All Monsters on TV for the very first time. The thrill and the excitement - this series has been truly amazing! Characters like the insane Doctor Gaius Baltar and the cylon replicant Number Six manage to stay alive in my subconscious, almost like old friends. Weird. Finally someone managed to make scifi for television that has beautiful SFX, spectacular production designs, great sound track (sounds like Dead Can Dance during the Serpent's Egg era) and actors that actually act. No more bad acting in fun clothing. This is scifi for grown-ups, not just for nerds. Don't miss it!

wot do u call it?

shystie, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

2 Step, urban or UK Garage has been declared dead many times since So Solid Crew started to fall apart and go "commercial" back in 2001 or 2002. But the genre is still flourishing under the name grime. There are loads of interesting acts and artists. Shystie (it's her excellent Diamond in the Dirt album you can see above), the Streets, Dizzee Rascal, Wiley, Lady Sovereign, Lethal Bizzle, Terror Danjah, Kano, Nasty Crew, Pay As You Go Crew and the Ruff Sqwad are just a few of them.
If you wonder what the f*ck grime is then think sound systems, pirate radio, Jungle and a bit of hip hop, electronica and ragga. It has a real street feel. No big money, big cars, gangstas, thugs, bitches or hoes - just geezers, eskimoes, east end, riddims, cider, rascals and hangin' at the local pub. It's a fresh breeze in these sad and boring times of retarded gangsta wannabes waving their guns and gold chains and their stupid ladies with their humongous silicone boobs dancing around them in bikinis. They suck big time. Grime is the opposite. The antidote. It's vital and exciting. The beats and bass lines are weird, dark and wild. The rhymes are often performed in ragga style but the lyrics are more about ordinary life than about the performers sexual capabilities. That's a welcome change. Vocal combat, battling, between artists and crews are very common. Especially on the pirate radio stations. They are usually very enjoyable and easy to find as mp3's.

Finally, Wiley's performance at Mondo were one of the best I've ever seen. It was most excellent. For more basic information about grime - check Stylus Magazines Grime : The Survival Guide.

underground

underground, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

I like the underground. The underground and old Gary Numan songs. Nothing quite like it... Afrika Bambaata, the hip hop/electro legend from South Bronx, made a nice cover of Gary Numans Metal on his latest album. Excellent!

Picture this if they could make the change
I'd love to pull the wires from the wall
Did you?
And who are you and how can I try?
Here inside I like metal
In you
All I know is no one dies
I'm still confusing love with need

battlestar galactica

battlestar galactica, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

I saw the original Battlestar Galactica movie back in 1978 or 79. Liked it a lot, but I don't remember much of it. Now I've just finished the first two episodes of sci-fi channels brand new vision of Battlestar Galactica. It's spectacular! The best sci-fi series I've ever seen on tv. It's dark and sexy. It has real characters, excellent actors and great photography (loads of hand held cameras!). Actually it's a lot like Homicide: Life on the Street or The West Wing in a sci-fi setting. Eventhough the characters live on board giant spaceships and fight against the Cylons, an android race created by humans (think The Terminator or Blade Runner), they use ordinary phones, they dress normal and use loads of normal today stuff. Weird, cool and very satisfying.

old boys

old boys, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

Meeting friends from the past. Had too many beers while trying to travel through time. Not sure if I read all the clues the right way... but some of them suggested that I'm getting old. Is that really the case? But it was nice to meet some friends from the old days when I had lots of hair and were able to drink more than three beers before I turned weird and incoherent. Those were the days! Now I'm paying the price for this serious time travel. But it's worth it. Always interesting & fun to meet your old buddies!

ice, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

Once again the very lovable Lundsjön. It's beautiful...

Nature's first green is gold,
Her hardest hue to hold.
Her early leafs a flower;
But only so an hour.
Then leaf subsides to leaf.
So Eden sank to grief,
So dawn goes down to day.
Nothing gold can stay.

cybernetic broadcasting system

Big thanx to Albion a.k.a. the King of Electronica. The Cybernetic Broadcasting System is a great link if you like electro, detroit electro, italo disco, disco, detroit house, well most forms of electronica and electronic dance music. Internet radio and excellent downloads (the I-f mixes are very very good). I've added it to my links if you'll need it in the future. Long live the new flesh!

odenplan, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

"The headache is as strong as the longing for the lost memories of New Years eve."
Grafitti at Odenplans subway station. Colour and poetry! A great combination.
I'm sorry for the translation. It's... not really right... It's better and different in Swedish.
"...huvudverken lika stark som saknaden av nyårsnattens minnen..."
Felstavningen beror antagligen på en överdos av lösningsmedel... Vackert tycker jag. Undrar vad dom gjorde?

will eisner 1917 - 2005

spirit, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

Will Eisner, one of the most influential and creative comic book artists ever, died January 3rd at the age of 87. Maybe most famous for his comic serial The Spirit which had an almost surreal film noir style. If you're the least interested in comics, then this is one artist you shouldn't miss.

rita & satan

rita & dog, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

Almost forgot two interesting events from my new year celebration. First Rita's fantastic apple daiquiri! How could I've forgotten that one? It was excellent! It was tasty! It was strong...
Then my meeting with Satan! He was a rather friendly fellow. Liked to sniff my crotch. That felt a bit weird.

"Big black shape with eyes of fire,
Telling people their desire
Satan sitting there he's smiling,
Watches those flames get higher and higher
Oh, No, No please God help me!"

zombies

zombies, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

Zombies, God I love zombie movies. Japanese internet zombies like the ones in Kairo or weird spiral zombies like the ones in Uzumaki. British art zombies like the ones in 28 Days Later or the zombie blokes from the pub in the romantic zombie comedy (romzomcom) Shaun of the Dead. Lucio Fulci's classic Italian 70's zombies from movies like The Beyond and Zombie Flesh Eaters. Well known american zombies like George A. Romero's Living Dead zombies and Sam Raimi's Evil Dead zombies. I love them all! It's one of my favourite genres. I have this dream. That is to make the scariest zombie movie or the scariest zombie novel ever! Or maybe a body snatcher movie... like Invasion of the Body Snatchers or The Thing... They are cool. Could a man find a more noble cause than that? It's excellence!
Need... more... brains...

read or die

read or die, originally uploaded by John Barleycorn.

Magic, action and adventure with a bunch of bibliomaniacs and other book addicts. How does that sound? Can it get any cooler than that? Read or Die must be every action loving librarians wet dream. First released in 2001 as a three episode OVA series telling the story about Miss Yomiko Readman, substitute teacher, bibliophile and secret agent of the British Library Task Force, codename The Paper, and her spectacular adventures. They are a cool mix of James Bond, magic and Japanese monster and superhero movies.
In 2003 came the follow up R.O.D. the TV. It's a 26-episode TV anime series about the adventures of three paper-using sisters, Michelle, Maggie and Anita, who became the bodyguards of Sumiregawa Nenene, a famous Japanese writer. The three sisters had a detective office in Hong Kong and every fan of Hong Kong movies will recognize their names. They are named after the legendary actresses Michelle Yeoh, Maggie Cheung and sadly missed Anita Mui. They all played together in the excellent movie The Heroic Trio. After you've seen the R.O.D. animes, you should go straight for that one!
Just remembered one more thing, R.O.D. the TV also has an excellent 60's influenced soundtrack! Don't miss that.
