el orfanato - the orphanage

El Orfanato is Juan Antonio Bayonas first full length movie. It's a great debut. A sad, slow paced, beautiful and very scary ghost story which reminds me a bit of The Shining, The Sixth Sense and The Others. The title reveals the background for the movie, an old orphanage. A family moves in there and of course strange things starts to happen right away. Belén Rueda is excellent as the mother and so is Roger Príncep as her son Simón. I'm not sure if you can say that there's a new wave of Latin movie makers. But this movie together with Pan's Labyrinth, Tropa de Elite and 28 Weeks Later for example are proof of the vitality and creativity that exist among many Spanish, Mexican and Brazilian movie makers. I'm really looking forward to see what directors like Juan Antonio Bayonas, José Padilha, Fernando Meirelles, Guillermo del Toro and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo will do in the future.
