q lazzarus - goodbye horses
Just because it's so fucking brilliant. Q Lazzarus and her one and only hit song Goodbye Horses. Now you can do your skin suit dance at home in front of the mirror. Just like Buffalo Bill.
He told me, I see you rise
But, it always falls.
I see them come,
I see them go
He said, All things pass into the night
And I said, Oh no sir I must say you're wrong
I must disagree Oh no sir I must say you're wrong.
Won't you listen to me
You told me, I've seen it all before
I've been there,
I've seen my hopes and dreams A lying on the ground
I've seen the sky, just begin to fall
He said, All things pass into the night
And I said, Oh no sir I must say you're wrong
And I must disagree,
Oh no sir, I must say you're wrong
Won't you listen to me
Goodbye horses I'm flying over you
Goodbye horses I'm flying over you
Goodbye horses I'm flying over you
Goodbye horses I'm flying flying flying over you.
ashes to ashes - season finale
So, the first season of Ashes To Ashes has reached its end. Unfortunately the scriptwriter turned the first 45 minutes of it into some kind of weird comedy in stead of the surreal and suspenseful police drama it used to be. Fortunately the last 15 minutes were really good. But I'm still disappointed. They had built up something interesting and uniqe and then they didn't use it to create a solid season finale. No suspense, no dark and cryptic messages from the Bowie pierrot and no cliffhanger to make us long for the next season. What were they thinking of? They should take a close look at the last episode of Lost season 3 and learn how to make a brilliant end to a great season. But at least we got to know who was behind the mask...

ashes to ashes
I've just watched the first seven episodes of BBC's follow up to Life On Mars - Ashes To Ashes. It's no longer 1973 and DCI Sam Tyler is dead. Now it's 1981 and DCI Gene Hunt and his homies Ray and Chris have been transfered from Manchester to London. In stead of Sam Tyler we meet DI Alex Drake who's been studying Sam Tylers suicide and the records of his experiences during his coma. In the first episode Alex get shot and wakes up in 1981. She gets really surprised when she meets Gene Hunt and his boys whom she remembers from Sam Tylers description of 1973. Contrary to Sam Alex actually has some kind of grasp of what has happened to her. She understands that she's in a coma or close to death and that her experiences, just as Sams, probably are constructs of her subconscious. She frequently and ironically refers to her new colleagues as "constructs". But in this "construct" someone haunts her and delivers disturbing messages - a spooky clown who resembles David Bowie's pierrot character in the Ashes To Ashes video.
Music is a very important part of Ashes To Ashes, just as it was in Life On Mars. Every episode has an excellent collection of songs from the late 70's and early 80's. Steve Strange even appears as himself in the second episode where Alex visits the Blitz. I really liked Life On Mars. Especially the first season. The second season made me kind of disappointed. So far I think Ashes To Ashes is better than Life On Mars. Keeley Hawes is excellent as Alex Tyler and Philip Glenister continues to be brilliant as Gene Hunt. Don't miss this series.

el orfanato - the orphanage
El Orfanato is Juan Antonio Bayonas first full length movie. It's a great debut. A sad, slow paced, beautiful and very scary ghost story which reminds me a bit of The Shining, The Sixth Sense and The Others. The title reveals the background for the movie, an old orphanage. A family moves in there and of course strange things starts to happen right away. Belén Rueda is excellent as the mother and so is Roger Príncep as her son Simón. I'm not sure if you can say that there's a new wave of Latin movie makers. But this movie together with Pan's Labyrinth, Tropa de Elite and 28 Weeks Later for example are proof of the vitality and creativity that exist among many Spanish, Mexican and Brazilian movie makers. I'm really looking forward to see what directors like Juan Antonio Bayonas, José Padilha, Fernando Meirelles, Guillermo del Toro and Juan Carlos Fresnadillo will do in the future.

crime & the city solution - the dolphins & the sharks
The sadly forgotten but always brilliant Crime & the City Solution. The song The Dolphins & The Sharks is from their final album Paradise Discotheque (1990). I miss this group. What happened to Simon Bonney and why is it so hard to find their albums on CD?
lost - 4:05 the constant
This was one hell of an episode. Possibly one of the greatest episodes of any TV series I've ever seen. I'm stunned. And, yes, Desmond and Sayid actually do meet Phoebe Buffay's irritating old psychiatrist boyfriend Roger (Fisher Stevens) on the boat. This is a Desmond centric episode and he has a tough time since his mind starts to drift between 1996 and 2004.
Desmond: I'm not supposed to be here! Open this door! Open this door!
George: Hey... hey... hey! It's happening to you too? Isn't it?
Fisher Stevens is pretty damn cool as George Minkowski. And the time jumps! They remind me of Donnie Darko. Desmond and Daniel are absolutely great in this episode. Especially the young Oxford Daniel. Love his hair!
Sayid: On the helicopter something happend to Desmond. He doesn't appear to recognize me or know where he is.
Jack: Side effects?
Daniel: Wait... Your friend... Desmond. Has he recently been exposed to high levels of radiation or electromagnetism? Okey, look we don't know why. But going to and coming from the island some people can get a little confused.
Juliet: So... is this amnesia?
Daniel: No. This is not amnesia.
Lab rats running through mazes, crazy scientists, true love, men in the military, time travel, hidden agendas, helicopter rides in bad weather, friendship... what more could you possibly ask for in a TV series? And Sayid is seriously kicking MacGuyvers ass. He manage to build phone out of a pile of junk on a boat in the middle of the Pacific so Desmond can call Penny in London. Impressive! If you haven't started to watch season 4 of Lost yet it's time to do so now. You won't find anything better or more intriguing.
